FOUR SQUARE group show coming this fall!

Taking advantage of the gallery’s location in North Beach (which draws a lot of tourists and a lot of children), FOUR SQUARE will expose new audiences to the incredible variety and quality in independent comics. 30 local and international artists have been asked to produce a single, 8x8inch, 4-panel comic. The subject and medium is open. By limiting the format and hanging the work, each artist’s unique approach will be emphasized equally. A catalogue of the show will be printed by LA-based, Never Press.

Pentagon Study Finds Sharp Rise In Military Sexual Assaults

The problem of sexual assault in the military leapt to the forefront in Washington on Tuesday as the Pentagon released a survey estimating that 26,000 people in the armed forces were sexually assaulted last year, up from 19,000 in 2010, and an angry President Obama and Congress demanded action.

The study, based on a confidential survey sent to 108,000 active-duty service members, was released two days after the officer in charge of sexual assault prevention programs for the Air Force was arrested and charged with sexual battery for grabbing a woman’s breasts and buttocks in an Arlington, Va., parking lot.

In a separate report made public on Tuesday, the military recorded 3,374 sexual assault reports last year, up from 3,192 in 2011, suggesting that many victims continue not to report the crimes for fear of retribution or a lack of justice under the department’s system for prosecution.

Pentagon officials said nearly 26,000 active-duty men and women had responded to the sexual assault survey. Of those, 6.1 percent of women and 1.2 percent of men said they had experienced sexual assault in the past year, which the survey defined as everything from rape to “unwanted sexual touching” of genitalia, breasts, buttocks or inner thighs.

From those percentages, the Pentagon extrapolated that 12,100 of the 203,000 women on active duty and 13,900 of the 1.2 million men on active duty had experienced some form of sexual assault. In 2010, a similar Pentagon survey found that 4.4 percent of active-duty women and fewer than 0.9 percent of active-duty men had experienced sexual assault.

Women in combat zones are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by the enemy.

I believe that there are a small group of women who hate men just for being men. I believe that the textbook definition of the word misandry fits that description. I believe there are bad things that happen to men. I believe those issues should be addressed. I do not believe that a fringe group of women who hate men can be blamed for those issues.

Misandry was a dead word until recently. A group of men who feared the progress of feminism revived the word and used it to undercut the movement. They like having the power being a man provides and they don’t want to lose that. So they created a movement, found a bunch of legitimate issues that affect men, and tried to blame women for those issues. They called this misandry. It’s like conservatives using buzzwords like “death panels” to make people fear health care. They let people assume it meant Obama wanted to kill your grandma. They let there cute little phrase infect the minds of good people and convince them of falsehoods.

People are telling me that men cannot report rape without getting laughed at. They say this is misandry. It is the fault of women who hate men. But that just doesn’t make any sense to me. When I seek a logical explanation, it seems more likely that this is because men are supposed to be strong and women are supposed to be weak. And rape has been viewed as something that happens mostly to women. So if it does happen to a man, they must be weak. How did this idea of men=strong and women=weak start? I’m pretty sure it wasn’t because of misandry. It is an ancient patriarchy collapsing in on itself.

True feminism is about fighting inequality. It’s about erasing that strong/weak perception ingrained into our society. Misandry, as the term is often used today, is about trying to blame women for anything bad that happens to men.

If you want to fight to fix issues that affect men, go for it. But I would really consider distancing yourself from this term. It is used to evangelize folks into a movement that is very problematic. A group that can’t handle scrutiny of their comic books and video games, so they send death and rape threats. A group that calls women sluts and think they ask for rape if they show too much cleavage. Those are the people who coined this term, and you should want nothing to do with them or their language.

We are wicked excited to announce Collective Stench will be a special guest at the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo, June 15 & 16 2013!

The Collective Stench is a group of friends who met at school in Providence, RI, and shared the love for bone-crushing comics. They now frequently table together at comics festivals, show together at art shows, and engage in other collaborative activities. Most of them are based in the greater New York area, with a few additional members in Providence, DC, Philadelphia, Austin, and The Bay area.

We’re really excited about the density and diversity of Collective Stench’s output - from their onslaught of vibrant anthologies to their constant stream of amazing zines and minicomics- the way the Stench fluidly moves between individual and group efforts is shaping and inspiring the graphic language and working format of comics today.

“Between 1948 and 1986, during his career as a prison guard, Danzig Baldaev made over 3,000 drawings of tattoos. They were his gateway into a secret world in which he acted as ethnographer, recording the rituals of a closed society. The icons and tribal languages he documented are artful, distasteful, sexually explicit and provocative, reflecting as they do the lives, status and traditions of the convicts that wore them. Baldaev made comprehensive notes about each tattoo, which he then carefully reproduced in his tiny St. Petersburg flat. The resulting exquisitely detailed ink drawings are accompanied with his handwritten notes and signature on the reverse, the paper is yellowed with age, and carries Baldaev’s stamp, giving the drawings a visceral temporality – almost like skin.” ~ Fuel Deisgn

I picked up the latest issue, number 3, of this thing that seems much discussed, at least in certain circles of more Tumblr-y parts of the comics internet. It’s got lots of contributors. I don’t think anyone would consider it a standard-bearer or anything, but it’s broad in its contributors, encompassing people whose work I’m familiar with and some I’m not. There is a part of me that went into it thinking, alright, these are the new cartoonists, let’s see what they’re up to: and then was sort of shocked by how, mid-nineties alt-comics also-rans it felt. Like the house anthology Top Shelf used to put out, or pretty much anything that would have Scott Mills in it. Or a Meathaus anthology. Like, those Meathaus anthologies have great people in them: I’ve got one I picked up used with Brandon Graham, Tom Herpich, Farel Dalrymple, etc. Happiness 3 has work by such talents as Mike Taylor, Conor Stechschulte, and Max Clotfelter, presented in a context where they don’t really get to make an impression except to people who know that those are people to watch. There’s also a lot of just bad, unappealing drawing in here. To name the worst offenders: KJ Martinet, Anthony Meloro, Garrett Young, and Ian McDuffie.

The variety of different drawing styles, normally a plus, starts to seem weird and unappealing, due to this thing where, while the book has a color section in the middle of abstract works, all the comics are in black and white, and everyone sort of has a different approach to shading: The book is really well-printed, and people who do subtle stuff with pencil or ink or wash generally have it look good, (Sara Drake’s piece in particular shows a lot of grain in its greys) but then like everyone who is shading their work on a computer, with greytones or zipatone looks really muddy and ugly. (exceptions: Joe Kessler, Sophia Foster-Dimino.) The stuff that’s flat black and white tends to look pretty bad too. I don’t know if people just didn’t know how good the printing would be, or they’re used to working full-color digitally, or whatever.

The thing that I think most surprised me was how straightforward most of the work was. I guess it’s not all “realism” but enough of it is- and all the pieces are pretty short that that sort of blurs into being the overall gestalt. Because of how short everything is, none of the “realism” pieces really go anywhere, towards actually building a character or whatever. There’s also a piece here with black characters that does this thing where the dialogue tries to convey dialect and enunciating with misspelling, and, yeah, the whole thing comes off as racist and patronizing.

That’s surprising, because the book also contains a letter from its editor, Leah Wishnia, where she comes off really sensitive about offensive material, specifically because of the way it marginalizes oppressed populations, but it seems like she meant more of the Johnny Ryan style attempts at transgression via drawing swastikas thing than the other ways people can make work that reeks of privilege. I do applaud her decision to avoid the one kind of stupid and offensive material though.

The book is also, like that “Garo Tribute Issue” of Secret Prison, hampered by weirdly arbitrary editorial and design choices. In Secret Prison, it was the whole “do comics that read from right-to-left” thing. Here, it’s the comic being a “flipbook,” not in the animation sense but in the Marvel Comics Presents sense, of equally distributed pages, reading towards the middle. The middle here are “abstract” works, presented sort of like paintings, but with the title of the piece and the person who made it printed on the work itself, and then you can sort of keep reading into a point where you’re looking at these pieces upside-down. Just a weird choice.

I think the book does have a lot of good people contributing to it, but as a survey of a world I am not fully aware of it just mostly displays the people I didn’t know about before as being not particularly deserving of my attention. It makes me worry and feel bad about the people whose work I do like, that people might be being exposed to it for the first time and not see anything worth investigating further.
